This study was a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effect of augmentin on patients with COPD treated with long-acting beta agonists (LABA) and metformin. We included in the study only studies that reported the effect of metformin, or placebo, on COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), and also on other types of COPD (asthma, dyspnea, chronic pain, dysreflexia, and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction). In the study of this study, metformin was shown to significantly increase the duration of COPD (by more than two days, compared with placebo) and exacerbation of COPD (by more than three days) in patients treated with LABA compared with placebo. Long-acting beta agonists (LABA) and metformin are drugs that are used to treat acute asthma exacerbations and other respiratory conditions. They are the most commonly used drugs in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in both primary and secondary prevention. The combination of LABA and metformin has been used to treat COPD, but their use in COPD has not been well studied. In this study, we evaluated the effects of metformin on patients with COPD treated with LABA and metformin. In addition, we evaluated the effect of metformin on the exacerbation of COPD and its long-term outcomes.
In this study, metformin was shown to significantly increase the duration of COPD (by more than two days compared with placebo) and exacerbation of COPD (by more than three days compared with placebo). The duration of COPD was estimated to be two days longer in patients treated with metformin compared with placebo (by more than two days compared with placebo). Additionally, metformin was shown to significantly increase the exacerbation of COPD (by more than three days compared with placebo) in patients treated with metformin compared with placebo. The effect of metformin on exacerbation of COPD was evaluated in a single dose study with metformin in patients with COPD treated with metformin.
Study Design
This was a single-arm, double-blind, randomized, single-centre, open-label, crossover study comparing metformin to LABA, metformin to metformin in COPD patients with a control group.
The study protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of the University of the Philippines, Universidade do Sul de Bahia, and all patients provided their written informed consent prior to the study. The study was carried out in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki and Good Clinical Practice. All patients provided their medical history, and all subjects received a physical examination. The patients were instructed to use their usual rescue inhaler technique. They were instructed to use their rescue inhaler technique for one minute at a time, as required. The rescue inhaler technique consisted of a two-piece, single-piece, inhaler cap with a spacer, and a pressurized metered-dose inhaler (Medrol).
